Ankle Sprains and Knee Pain: Getting Back on the Court

Basketball combines jumping, cutting, landing, and quick changes of direction. An ankle sprain or knee pain can affect confidence as much as comfort, especially when an athlete is eager to return.

Common symptoms

Ankle sprains may cause pain, swelling, bruising, stiffness, or a feeling of giving way. Knee pain may occur with jumping, running, stairs, squatting, or repeated landings.

Contributing factors

Previous injury, reduced ankle motion, hip or leg weakness, fatigue, landing mechanics, and a sudden increase in games or practices may contribute to symptoms.

How physical therapy may help

A therapist may assess swelling, range of motion, balance, strength, landing control, and sport-specific movement. A plan may progress from comfortable walking and strength work to hopping, cutting, and basketball drills.

  • Use pain and swelling as information.

  • Rebuild single-leg control before high-speed cutting.

  • Progress practice demands gradually.

A gradual return to sport

Returning to sport is usually a progression, not a single test. A physical therapist may help you build from comfortable daily movement to controlled drills, practice demands, and eventually competition, while considering symptoms, strength, movement quality, workload, and confidence. The pace should be individualized rather than based on a fixed timeline.

When to seek care

Persistent pain, swelling, weakness, repeated injury, loss of motion, or difficulty performing normal sport activities are reasonable reasons to seek an evaluation. Sudden severe pain, deformity, major swelling, numbness, or loss of function should receive prompt medical attention.

If you are dealing with sports-related pain or are planning a return to activity, request an evaluation at Reynoso Rehab Physical Therapy & Sports Performance in Clifton, NJ, call 201-564-0390, or visit the existing Contact / Request Appointment page. Se habla español.
