Back Pain During Your Golf Swing: How Physical Therapy Can Help

A golf swing combines trunk rotation, hip movement, balance, and repeated practice. Back pain can change the way a golfer moves and may become more noticeable as rounds or practice sessions continue.

Common symptoms

Golfers may notice pain during the backswing, downswing, follow-through, walking the course, or after a round. Stiffness, reduced rotation, or difficulty getting comfortable may also occur.

Contributing factors

Limited hip or upper-back mobility, reduced trunk or leg strength, fatigue, a sudden increase in rounds, and changes in equipment or swing demands may affect symptoms.

How physical therapy may help

A therapist may assess the spine, hips, strength, balance, and swing-related movement. A plan may include mobility work, trunk and hip strengthening, education about practice volume, and a gradual return from short sessions to fuller rounds.

  • Warm up with comfortable whole-body movement.

  • Increase practice volume in small steps.

  • Stop and seek guidance when symptoms are worsening or changing.

A gradual return to sport

Returning to sport is usually a progression, not a single test. A physical therapist may help you build from comfortable daily movement to controlled drills, practice demands, and eventually competition, while considering symptoms, strength, movement quality, workload, and confidence. The pace should be individualized rather than based on a fixed timeline.

When to seek care

Persistent pain, swelling, weakness, repeated injury, loss of motion, or difficulty performing normal sport activities are reasonable reasons to seek an evaluation. Sudden severe pain, deformity, major swelling, numbness, or loss of function should receive prompt medical attention.

If you are dealing with sports-related pain or are planning a return to activity, request an evaluation at Reynoso Rehab Physical Therapy & Sports Performance in Clifton, NJ, call 201-564-0390, or visit the existing Contact / Request Appointment page. Se habla español.
